The arena was filling up quite nicely. I arrive early and bump in to the beautiful Sarah-Jane Crawford (BBC 1XTRA) and friend, chilling in the VIP section of the stands. Had a quick chat and went to the set up in front of the stage, which I am now aware is called “The Pit”! 10 or more photographers, each equipped with 2 serious DSLR cameras, me with my Sony A900 and 50mm f1.4 lens. I had never done this before and noticed that none of the other photographers were using flashes… so I slowly took mine off not to look like a complete n0ob! I then spoke to one of the other photographers and asked how long do they normally stay and he said… “normally 3 songs, unless we get told otherwise”. So im there trying to get my settings right on the camera, but its hard as the “stage lighting” hasn’t come on yet.

The lights go out, the stage is set, flames fly, lights come on… 50 cent arrives!

Although the rule is 3 songs, he kinda done 1.25 songs as he only done 50 seconds of each song… so timing on the photos had to be on point as you only get those few chances..

(quote from the photographer : Beyonce only allows 60 seconds and Lady Gaga allows 1 song)

Well a few photos taken and it was time to go home…

It was an incredible insight to how things work in the photographic world. I was in there with people who look like they do this day in and day out. It was good to speak to a couple of them to hear thoughts. I loved it and it was a great experience.

Till the next time…
